Adoption Process

Thank you for your interest in adopting a homeless pet from Will County Humane Society! We know you can’t wait to bring your new best friend home, and it’s important for you to know that we’re just as eager to find forever homes for our adoptable pets. The purpose of our adoption process is to make sure the match is right between pet and potential guardian. First you’ll need to stop by the shelter and meet our adoptable pets. Once you’ve found you’re perfect match you’ll fill out an adoption screening form. In most instances you’ll need to meet with an Adoption Counselor. Anyone interested in adopting from us should meet the following basic criteria:

To adopt a cat from WCHS you should

  • Be at least 21 years of age.
  • Live within 90 minutes of the shelter.
  • Provide a comprehensive history of prior pet ownership including corresponding vets.
  • Have a form of identification (license or state ID)
  • Verify that you are allowed to have a cat where you currently live.
  • Be able to spend the time and resources necessary to provide the training, medical treatment and proper care for your cat.
  • Bring along all family members (including children) to meet the cats.
  • Understand that our adoption fee is $100.00 per cat or kitten. We accept cash, debit or credit for payments. Personal checks will not be accepted.
  • Understand that kittens are your responsibility to follow-up with a coresponding spay/neuter and that we will follow up to confirm with your vet that the procedure has occurred.
  • Understand that all adult cats have been spayed or neutered and have received Rabies, Feline Leukemia, Feline Distemper, Chlamydia, and Feline Rhino Vaccines.
  • Understand that kittens have received their first shots.

To adopt a dog from WCHS you should

  • Be at least 21 years of age.
  • Live within 90 minutes of the shelter.
  • Have a form of identification (license or state ID)
  • Provide a comprehensive history of prior pet ownership including corresponding vets.
  • Verify that you are allowed to have a pet of the breed and size where you currently live.
  • Be able to spend the time and resources necessary to provide the training, medical treatment and proper care for your pet.
  • Bring along all family members including any resident dogs or children for an introduction to a new dog.
  • Understand that our adoption fee is $175.00 for adult dogs and puppies. We accept cash, debit or credit for payments. Personal checks will not be accepted.
  • Understand that puppies are your responsibility to follow-up with a coresponding spay/neuter and that we will follow up to confirm with your vet that the procedure has occurred.
  • Understand that all adult dogs have been spayed or neutered and have received Rabies, Distemper, Parvo, Corona, Leptospirosis Nepatitis and Kennel Cough Vaccines.
  • Puppies have received their first shot(s).
  • Have the time to spend up to an hour with an adoption counselor to discuss the responsibility of owning a pet and making it a lifetime commitment.
